Gray Zone Warfare’s Rogue Ops Update Has Me Fully Invested in This Shooter’s

Gray Zone Warfare’s 0.5 update, otherwise known as ‘Rogue Ops’, launches globally tomorrow, October 22nd. I had early access by way of a preview event, and I was able to dive deep into the newest locations introduced in this monumental update. I also played around with the new arsenal, explored the fresh endgame mechanics, and had a look at the new quests that are pushing lore to the max.

I came away from my time with Rogue Ops (many hours in a short window!) absolutely enthralled by what’s on offer. Gray Zone Warfare is on an indomitable trajectory, and with each successive update, I find myself being irrevocably pulled deeper into the heart of Lamang, the game’s fictional, jungle-themed world.

Rogue Ops Might Be Gray Zone Warfare’s Best Update Yet

Earlier this year, I had the chance to preview Spearhead, Gray Zone Warfare’s 0.4 update, which I dubbed ‘a stunning example of what happens when a dedicated, devoted developer expresses nothing but passion for the core product they have created.’ I awarded that expansion a 9/10 in a comprehensive review, and here we are, back again, six months later.

This isn’t a full review, but it is an impressions piece.

The 0.4 update was phenomenal because it was such a quality-of-life overhaul. It added and amended all the game’s most critical features, tweaking onboarding, in-game navigation, the economy, and how missions are carried out. The visuals were improved, animations were enhanced, and countless bugs were addressed.

But the 0.5 update is another beast entirely.

With Rogue Ops, we get entirely new ways to play the game and enjoy the open-world environment that is getting more detailed with each new update. In this patch, players unlock a hideout, which itself contains multiple gameplay layers. We’re now getting a drug manufacturing facility and the ability to secure, salvage, and distribute black market technology.

This facet adds endgame content, allowing players to go into the wide, open map and find resources to build and upgrade their hideout and to craft things, including illegal narcotics. You can run drugs, smuggle military technology, and probe through new and threatening locations for some extremely valuable loot.

While you’re doing that, you can lean on new animations, seven new weapons, enhanced healing mechanics, and a better visual palette, thanks to an engine upgrade.

It’s deeper than ever before, and that’s why MADFINGER is now referring to the game as a ‘Merc-Sim’ and not a ‘Mil-Sim’. You’re living a life out there now, making money and digging through Lamang with grim determination to uncover the ultimate mystery.

And that ultimate mystery is now within spitting distance. For two and a half years, players have been wondering what the hell is up with Ground Zero, the restricted zone at the heart of the map. MADFINGER’s storytelling skills have worked wonders, and we’re being drip-fed bits and pieces of lore indicating what might have happened, but it’s still just guesswork, conjecture, and player-driven conspiracy theories.

It’s brilliant.

Rogue Ops takes the concept of Ground Zero and runs further with it than ever before. We’re on the cusp of discovering the secrets at the centre of the map, with the new locations all pointing to something tied to that narrative.

The haunting asylum, with experiments in the basement; the deep-space satellite station with Cold War bunkers; and the military base that guards an ancient temple leading into Ground Zero. It’s all there, ready and waiting to be explored.

I will stress that things haven’t been perfect. After the 0.5 update went live for ‘previewers’, it was discovered that some players weren’t happy with the state of some elements, including weapon durability, the method of obtaining the new weapons, and the ‘soft wipe’ that MADFINGER pushed out.

But then, the firm’s CEO took to social media to address those concerns, like an utter boss. The transparency and openness of this team know no bounds, I’ve learned.

Putting hours into Gray Zone Warfare for 0.5 has taught me something unsuppressable, and that’s that I’m more curious, intrigued, and excited to know what’s happening at the heart of the map than I am to find out anything about any other game coming soon.

The endgame loop will hold my attention, the new weapons give me more to aim for (pun?), and the reputation system will keep me balancing the diverse roster of vendors for now. But soon, I’m going to be itching for 0.6, which could take us even closer to Ground Zero.

You’d better believe I’ll be first in line to find out what the hell is going on there, and that I’ll be right here, reporting on it.
